SharePoint Theme Customization, let’s start at the end. Here’s a freebie!
Take a look at the before and after:

After:

I was intially holding off on making this post as I’m going to be touching on it during the ending steps in the tutorial posts that are now on-going.
After much hounding from Amanda I’ve decided to post this theme up for grabs now.
One of the things my team does is create components (web parts, site templates, applications, etc…) for SharePoint.
To add to the pot I have created a custom theme for Windows SharePoint Services that is available for download for free from our company’s corporate site.
To Deploy this theme:

Now that that is out of the way – next thing you’ll want to do is actually get it.
Download the Team Tools SharePoint (WSS) Theme
Step One
Extract the zip file to your hard-drive to whatever location you wish. (example: c:\temp)
Browse to the location where you have extracted the files.
Step Two
Copy the “TEAMTOOLS” folder to the following location on your SharePoint server:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\THEMES
Step Three
Locate and open the SPTHEMES.XML file located at:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033
Add the following entry to the SPTHEMES.XML file:

Step Four
Locate the two thumbnail images are located at
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\THEMES\TEAMTOOLS\THUMBNAILS
Copy the two images (teamtools.gif and teamtools.png) to the following directory on the server
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\IMAGES
That’s it, it’s ready to use!
To apply your theme, go to the settings page for your site located at
http://YOURSITE/_layouts/1033/settings.aspx and select “Apply Theme to Site” from the customize options. Select the Team Tools theme from your list.

I’m sorry you are having trouble with the theme. I think you should probably try it again.
I’ve installed it several times and have not had that problem.
If indeed there is a problem with the documentation or theme I will correct it, however I’m fairly certain it should work.
