Many of you have been wondering what's been going on with SharePoint Nation.
Amanda and I are currently working on getting a v1 release very soon..
I have edited this entry to help people better understand just what SharePoint Nation is. There has been some concern over it perhaps competing with SharePoint resource sites currently feeding the community.
SharePoint Nation should definately not be seen as a "resource site" or competition. SharePoint Nation can be considered an organization that will compliment the existing SharePoint Resources.
SharePoint Nation as mentioned can be considered an organization of SharePoint professionals which in most cases are individuals from the community. These people will be there to maintain sections specific to their expertise and also offer help when possible in the form of online chats etc.
SharePoint Nation is not being set up to re-write existing information, instead it will help lead people to this information in a very targetted fashion.
The goal and sole purpose of SharePoint Nation is to act as a "Virtual User Group". Not an online resource site.
There are a lot of features we have planned most of which will evolve over time. We will be scouting for contributors to the site possibly as early as next week. We are hoping to put some solid time into getting an initial release ready this weekend.
At the very least I should be able to tell you this weekend what features will be included in release 1 which will be on-line *very* soon.
We will be looking for 'very well versed' individuals to help out with certain sections of the site and maintaining its content. If you have an interest in a particular area feel free to drop me a line, or leave a comment here.
We will be breaking things down as much as possible to really filter the proper information into the appropriate channels.
We really want to cover the main areas such as consulting, development, customization, administration etc.

Not to rock the boat, but what's the point? With SharePoint University, MSD2D, SharePoint Blogs and the SharePoint space on GotDotNet, seems like the community stays pretty well fed. :)
This site is actually a "virtual user group". It isn't actually a "portal as such".
Like any user group, it's meant to be run more like an organization of peers working together, networking and learning.
It shouldn't be seen as a 'competitive' site to any of the existing sites, if anything it should be complimentary as we're hoping to highlight a lot of these sites and make sure people are aware of them.
As always, you can count me in.
Glad to hear it Bil! :)
Great to see that theres a community already heavily into the stuff I've just started on...
As a long-time standards/CSS guy, I've only started getting into Sharepoint in the last two weeks - will keep my eye on what you're doing!
Good to 'virtually' meet you Martin. It's always good to have some web-standards/css avocates around :)
Sharepoint may hurt in that department for a little while but it really is a great platform.
Looking at next version coming down the pipe it's going to get even better.
I'm holding on to the hope that as IE evolves and adopts more of the mainstream CSS that SharePoint will someday follow suit.
They've been making strides w/ the master-pages so all hope is not lost :)
I was pretty disgusted the first time I opened the .aspx files, but like you say, it should only get better, and as the core of Office it's going to become really important...
In the meantime, I've spent some time throwing out the tables, and rebuilding everything with divs - I know it's going to hurt when I eventually have to rebuild everything, but until then it's good practice :-)
I have created several fully css-based layouts in the past for some SharePoint sites I've worked on.
Unfortunately as of now the web parts still render out as tables.
I've been after a developer here at the office to give a whirl to rendering out a couple of custom web parts using DIVS.
He's very standards minded as well so I expect to see some in the semi-near future :)
Cheers,
Shane
Shane: I certainly wan't concerned about competition, it's all about the community. :) I just wondered what the differentiating factor was. I'm sure there'll be plenty of cross-linking, but I'd really like to see one place that everyone goes to, by default. I have a few domain names that would be great "unifying sites" for such an endeavor.
Good stuff Dustin.
I had a few other emails people wondering what it was all about as well. :)
